#1 HIT SONGS: September 29th, 1973 and 1983

“TELL HER ABOUT IT” BILLY JOEL

Tell_Her_About_ItThirty years ago today, the number song in the country was Billy Joel’s “Tell Her About It” from his throwback album, An Innocent Man. What makes the song so special TODAY is that we’re looking back thirty years ago to 1983, just as Billy’s looking back twenty years earlier to the Ed Sullivan Show. Rodney Dangerfield, Topo Gigio, and Russian cosmonauts make cameos in the video. “Tell Her About It” only spent one week at #1 but did knock off Flashdance’s “Maniac” from the top spot.

“WE’RE AN AMERICAN BAND” GRAND FUNK RAILROAD

grand funkForty years ago today, September 29, 1973, Grand Funk Railroad took their All-American classic rock anthem straight to #1. Mark Farner, the lead singer of Grand Funk, didn’t sing lead on their biggest hit, as the writer, Don Brewer, sang this one himself. “We’re An American Band” has become one of the most covered songs of the era. In concert, Kid Rock, Phish, Poison, Rascal Flatts, Rob Zombie, and even the Village People break out the red, white, and blue, and crank up this 40 year old classic.
