10th Anniversary of the Greatest Super Bowl Halftime Show Ever

What Super Bowl Halftime Show was you most memorable? Bruce Springsteen in Tampa in 2009? Janet Jackson’s 2004 wardrobe malfunction? Michael Jackson in 1993, the first to really take it to the forefront? U2 in 2002? Aerosmith, NSync, and Britney Spears in 2001? Beyonce’ in 2013? Each of these events left a fond memory in our hearts and minds but it’s truly hard to rank any of those shows higher than Prince Rogers Nelson in Miami 2007.

Dressed in a neon aqua suit and orange shirt (who else could pull that look off?), Prince took to the stage designed to match his Love Symbol. During a torrential downpour which made the producers wonder if the show could even go on, Prince never hesitated. In fact, he asked the producers “Can you make it rain harder?” True to form, the deluge of rain dramatically enhanced the theatricality of the event. Snippets of Bob Dylan’s “All Along The Watchtower” which brought back memories of Jimi Hendrix, “Let’s Go Crazy”, “Baby I’m A Star” with the Florida A&M marching band, and even a little Foo Fighters’ “Best of Me” for good measure. Literally a tear from heaven rained down on the stage for the closing number, “Purple Rain”. As the raindrops glistened off the purple stage lights, it was almost as if Prince orchestrated this masterful natural maneuver for the Super Bowl show. The guitar solo, Prince’s voice, that suggestive silhouette, the rain, everything was utter perfection and a crowning moment of Prince’s career.
