2012 Bonus Tracks: Bush with Gwen Stefani, Michael Jackson Dubstep, Halestorm with Sixx AM

gavingwenkroq1KROQ-FM has been one of the top radio stations in the country for the last two decades. The California rock radio station puts on a yearly Almost Acoustic Christmas concert and brings out some of the biggest acts to raise money for charity. On December 8, 2012, Bush headlined the show and Gavin Rossdale brought out his wife, Gwen Stefani, to join him on the 90’s alt-rock burner, Glycerine. They look so happy performing together although Gwen’s inclusion doesn’t totally work musically, it’s a memorable collaboration.

michael-speed-demon-michael-jackson-8006403-720-576The 25th Anniversary re-release of Michael Jackson’s “Bad” album came with a bonus CD of a MJ concert and a 3rd disc of remixes and unreleased songs. The highlight was the dub-step reworking of “Speed Demon” that actually works well! Midway through the song, hardcore beats and a Skrillex-like breakdown amps up the energy to overload. Michael was always in the forefront of new music trends and I’m sure he would loved experimenting with the latest beats.

Halestorm- Nashville Selects by Rob Fenn-2620One of the best songs on the 2012 Halestorm CD, “The Strange Case Of …..” wasn’t actually on the album. A B-side bonus track, “Private Parts” was a duet with James Michael, the singer with Nikki Sixx’s band, Sixx AM. It’s a power ballad that highlights the vocal range of Lizzy Hale. Equal parts sensitivity mixed with her primal scream rocker vocals, it deserved to make the final CD cut but thankfully was included on the Deluxe Version with bonus tracks.
