Tomorrow, Foreigner will be releasing their first acoustic album, In Concert Unplugged, exclusively on Amazon.com with all proceeds benefiting the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) and embarking on an acoustic U.S. in support of the new album. Kelly Hansen has done an AMAZING job replacing a classic rock icon, Lou Gramm, but today let’s take a trip down memory lane to the early days with the crown jewel in Foreigner’s illustrious discography, their 1981 release, 4.
I dare you to name another Foreigner album that packs a finer trio of signature songs than Urgent, Waiting For A Girl Like You, and Juke Box Hero. Then when you dig a little deeper you discover the entire album is loaded with some of Foreigner’s best underrated songs to date. Produced with Mutt Lange, who had just finished “Back In Black” with AC/DC, Foreigner added the legendary saxophone skills of 60’s icon, Junior Walker and Billy Joel’s main man, Mark Rivera. Add in synthesizer by the one and only, Thomas Dolby and you have a true all-star collaboration lineup. Foreigner 4 spent 10 weeks at #1 on the Albums Chart topping the likes of Journey (Escape), The Rolling Stones (Tattoo You), and Stevie Nicks (Bella Donna). Enjoy a trip back in time with some of the greatest low-budget pre-MTV videos of their time and check out my interview with Thom Gimbel last summer.
“WAITING FOR A GIRL LIKE YOU” set a record for the longest running song to sit at #2 on the Billboard Singles Chart, Olivia Newton-John and Hall & Oates held the #1 spot for ten weeks while Foreigner held the runner-up spot.
“URGENT” The sexy, sax-driven rocker became a Top 5 hit that drove album sales to a new market. Backed with the B-Side “Girl On The Moon” it’s difficult to name a better One-Two punch on a Foreigner 45.
“BREAK IT UP” The fourth single didn’t become a best selling hit but the melodic power ballad sound was the perfect follow-up to “Juke Box Hero.”
Don’t forget “Woman In Black”, “Don’t Let Go”, “Luanne”, and the opening track “Night Life” which demand a spot on any Best of Foreigner Ultimate Playlist.
