Heavy Metal has always a male-driven music genre. But gender roles have been changing more and more over the past two decades. In fact, what unique feature is a common thread that ties together White Zombie, Hole, All That Remains, Sonic Youth, The Melvins, The Runaways, Sick Puppies, Coal Chamber, and The Smashing Pumpkins? Heavy metal bassists have been nicknamed “Gods Of Thunder”, well it’s time to change the moniker to “Goddesses Of Thunder.” Each of these huge bands have featured a female bassist. No longer do young female rockers have to dream of starting an all-girl rock band, bassists like Jeanne Sagan (formerly with All That Remains), Kim Gordon, Melissa Auf Der Maur (Hole and Smashing Pumpkins), Sean Yseult (White Zombie) and Emma Anzia (aka the “Female Flea”) have all broken the boy’s club glass ceiling and became metal superstars in primarily all male hard rock bands. You can add to this list: Wanda Ortiz, Jennifer Finch, Jackie Fox, and Melanie Sisneros, let check out some of these bands!
“MORE HUMAN THAN HUMAN” WHITE ZOMBIE (Sean Yseult)
“DIRTY BOOTS” SONIC YOUTH (Kim Gordon)
“WHAT IF I WAS NOTHING” ALL THAT REMAINS (Jeanne Sagan)
“STAND INSIDE MY LOVE” SMASHING PUMPKINS (Melissa Auf Der Maur)
