“I don’t have Ex’s, I have Y’s….like Y the hell did I date you?”
“We are never ever ever ever getting back together” (Taylor Swift)
“But I set fire to the rain, watched it pour as I touched your face.
Well, it burned while I cried cause I heard it screaming out your name” (Adele)
For every love song on the radio, there’s the other side of romance, the break-up. Both Taylor Swift and Adele have made a career out of their love life bringing each emotion to the forefront with their latest singles. Some are hopeful like “Hello” and others are more direct like Alanis Morissette’s 90s anthem “You Oughta Know”.
Add this year’s fasting rising superstar, Dua Lipa, to the list of artists who’ve recorded the ultimate angry breakup song with a pair of biting diatribes. Dua’s latest single, the EDM-tinged pop favorite, “New Rules”, sets the stage with a countdown of the steps to avoid:
One: don’t pick up the phone
You know he’s only calling ’cause he’s drunk and alone
Two: don’t let him in
You have to kick him out again
Three: don’t be his friend
You know you’re gonna wake up in his bed in the morning
And if you’re under him
You ain’t getting over him 🙂

The 22 year old Albanian singer doesn’t hold back any punches with a deeper album track and a fan favorite, “IDGAF” from her debut album. The explicit lyrics don’t come off as contrite but flow naturally as she details how she’s cried enough and moved on with her life. It’s also got a bouncy almost Caribbean beat complete with handclaps that calls to mind Taylor’s “We Are Never Getting Back Together” and some Trina’s girl empowerment anthems. Have no fear for the beautiful pop star, rumor has it she’s moved on to her latest boyfriend, a fellow singer named Paul Klein.
