Best Stevie Wonder Cover Ever?: Mary J Blige, Jodeci, Dazz Band

MTV Unplugged was a revelation. Taking the songs we’ve heard so many times before and stripping them down to the roots. Acoustic versions bring out the heart and soul of the lyrics. Groups like Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Eric Clapton, and Aerosmith had top selling albums from these performances. Then LL Cool J did a rap performance with a full band and hip hop joined the Unplugged party. Here’s one of my epic favorites, K-Ci and Jo Jo as members of Jodeci taking on the Stevie Wonder ballad, Lately.

“You know I love music! And everytime I hear something hot I wanna move, it makes me wanna have fun, but there is something about this joint right here, that makes me wanna go….wooooooo”. The Queen of Hip Hop/Soul gets the party started with one of her best upbeat jams. Having a rough day, pop this song onto your music player and let the music take you away. Check out the band on this live performance from the Pepsi Smash series.

SR-71 did an amazing hard rock cover of this song that I’ll feature on a future post. Here is the funky 1982 original by one of the finest R&B bands to come of Cleveland, Ohio. They epitomized 80’s funk with hits like this one and “Joystick”. They didn’t last long but did make a comeback in the 90’s/early 2000’s on Sinbad’s Summer Jam Series. The concerts brought back bands like Maze, The Gap Band, and the S.O.S. Band. I wish they still made music as good as this today.
