BLUESWOMEN: Janiva Magness, Beth Hart, Janis Joplin

“I’D RATHER GO BLIND”      BETH HART with JEFF BECK

beth hart jeff beckWhen it comes to rhythm and blues classics, I’d Rather Go Blind by Etta James would be on many Top 10 Of All-Time lists. The iconic blues anthem has been recorded by everyone from Rod Stewart, Beyonce’, B.B. King, Clarence Carter, and Koko Taylor. When it came time to induct Buddy Guy into the 35th Annual Kennedy Space Center Honors, Beth Hart and Hall of Fame guitarist, Jeff Beck, performed arguably the greatest live version of the song ever. It’s a breathtaking performance of intensity, passion, and vulnerability.

“YOU WERE NEVER MINE”   JANIVA MAGNESS

Janiva Magness coverIn 2009, Janiva was named the winner of the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year by the Blues Foundation. She became only the 2nd woman to win the blues award! Janiva is from Detroit and has been releasing quality traditional blues albums since 1997. Her version of Delbert McClinton’s You Were Never Mine is longing and painful yet feels totally authentic. You can feel each emotion as Janiva sings her heart out.

“MOVE OVER”    JANIS JOPLIN

Janis-Joplin-Move-OverI’ll be honest, my first introduction to this song was Cinderella’s hair metal cover of the song in the 80’s. Janis Joplin’s original version is a frantic, energetic, bluesy powerhouse. Watching this video is a time warp back to the 1970 from the retro sound, the vests, long hair, colorful outfits, and Janis’ one of a kind vocal performance. This song comes from her posthumous fourth album, Pearl, that also featured Me & Bobby McGee, Cry Baby, and Mercedes Benz. It’s included in Rolling Stone Magazine’s Top 500 albums of all-time.
