“THREE LOCK BOX” SAMMY HAGAR
I stumbled on this YouTube video today. The title track from Sammy Hagar’s second album with Geffen Records features “The Red Rocker” in his jumpsuit, the long curly hair, the guitar solo in front of the large mirror, this video just screams “Lost 80’s CLASSIC”. Here’s a look back at some solo Hagar favorites before his Van Hagar days.
“WINNER TAKES ALL” SAMMY HAGAR with EDDIE VAN HALEN
It’s hard to think of a better movie about arm wrestling than Sylvester Stallone’s Oscar Winning performance in Over The Top. Ooops, I meant it’s hard to imagine any other movie about arm wrestling and I’m not 100% sure if Sly actually was the best actor winner. One highlight from the film was the collaboration between Sammy Hagar and Eddie Van Halen on “Winner Takes All”. In the film , John Wetton of Asia, sang the song but the soundtrack featured the rougher version by Sammy and his new bandmate, EVH.
“EAGLES FLY” SAMMY HAGAR
Last summer, I fulfilled a lifelong goal of skydiving in Florida during my summer vacation. The flight to 12,000 foot altitude took a LONG 15 minutes cramped inside of a tiny aircraft as the anticipation was building out of control. That moment when you look outside and realize you’re actually going to do this is a combination of terrifying, exciting, and life changing. For my skydive video, I combined Motley Crue’s “Kickstart My Heart” (skydive naked from an airplane…..I wasn’t that brave 🙂 and Sammy Hagar’s 1987 inspiring classic.
“PIECE OF MY HEART” SAMMY HAGAR
Standing Hampton was the solo debut for Sammy Hagar with Geffen Records. Google “standing hampton” and you’ll find it’s a British Cockney expression for a man in full arousal. Typical Sammy Hagar! The album was the start of a string of Top 10 rock albums that made Sammy Hagar a mainstream rock icon. Included on the album was “There’s Only One Way To Rock”, “I’ll Fall In Love Again”, “Heavy Metal”, and a high energy cover of this Janis Joplin masterpiece.
“REMEMBER THE HEROES” SAMMY HAGAR with MIKE RENO of LOVERBOY
Co-written by Jonathan Cain from Journey, vocals shared by Mike Reno of Loverboy, and backing vocals by Richard Page of Mister Mister, you have an 80’s all-star lineup helping Sammy here on a song inspired by those who served our country. Lyrics:
Stranger in a foreign land
Fearful cries surround him.
Returning home a wounded man
To find he’s been forgotten, yeah.
Courage is the badge he wears
Blinded by obsession.
Wars are won by those who dare
The memory still haunts him.
Remember the heroes
Who fight for the right to choose.
