Live Through This, the second album by Courtney Love and Hole, is a certifiable grunge rock masterpiece. After this landmark release, you have the suicide of Kurt Cobain, the shift in popularity away from grunge, the death of Hole’s bassist, and a physical and emotional transformation with Courtney. Hole’s highly anticipated third CD added Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins in the studio and Melissa Auf der Maur’s addition to the band. Their new sound was modern rock friendly as Courtney attempted to recreate the California music sound that influenced her teen years.
Unlike Hole’s raw, unfiltered style on Pretty On The Inside, their new sound was polished, melodic, yet still emotional and intense without going to extremes. “Oh make me over, I’m all I wanna be”… These changes were reflected in Courtney’s physical makeover who was now a motion picture star and appearing in print ads. The lead single, Celebrity Skin, established Hole as a viable pop rock band ready to attack the music charts. Malibu continued the pattern with a beautiful, end of summer romp. Awful mixes Go-Go’s pop with the snarl of Joan Jett.
Critics were in love with Hole’s ability to be “accessible, fiery, and intimate” at the same time. Deeper albums cuts like Dying hinted at Courtney’s loss of her husband. Hits So Hard sounds like a lost Smashing Pumpkins track with a new female lead singer. Petals is a hidden treasure, a slice of 90’s pop heaven and my FAVORITE song on the CD. Recorded 15 years ago, take a trip back to today’s spotlight album.
