When it comes to #1 on the Billboard Singles chart, a few obvious artists are at the top of the list. The Beatles rank #1 with 20 chart-topping hits, Elvis Presley is in third place with 17 and surprisingly Mariah Carey is currently #2 all-time with 18 #1 hit songs. But whatever if we open this discussion up to the “greatest domination by any artist on any Billboard Music Chart”, who would reign supreme? Bob Marley in Reggae? Michael Jackson in R&B? For almost a decade that honor would belong to the ultimate Texas Cowboy, George Strait. In 2008, George hit #1 on the Hot Country Singles Chart for the 44th time and surpassed Conway Twitty, as not only the ultimate country superstar, his total of #1 hits surpassed anyone at any music genre.
“AMARILLO BY MORNING” George Strait
This year, history was made when George Strait passed over his crown as the ultimate chart dominator when Madonna scored her 45th #1 hit song on the Billboard Dance/Club Singles Charts. Beginning with the dual-sided #1 hit “Holiday/Lucky Star” in 1983, Madonna consistently topped the charts for three decades of consecutive hit singles. Material Girl, Into The Groove, Vogue, Erotica, Frozen, Beautiful Stranger…..year after year, Madonna’s tally grew higher and higher. This summer, Ghosttown, the second single from her “Rebel Heart” CD, didn’t do well on the Billboard Singles Chart but went straight to #1 on the Dance Charts and became her 45th #1 hit song.
