Cher – “Half Breed”

cherhalfbreedThe P.C. police would be all over Cher if she tried to release “Half Breed” today and what about that music video featuring Cher wearing a full American Indian headdress? .   The song went to #1 in the U.S. in the fall of 1973.   Like so many people in our “melting pot” country, Cher has a look that makes you curious what nationality mix is in her background.   Dark skin, dark hair, an exotic flair that makes you think Italian, Spanish, Egyptian ????    Turns out Cher is part Armenian, part Irish, English, German, and Cherokee Indian.   This diversity inspired “Half Breed”, a declaration of acceptance over preconceived prejudices.   The song was recorded with the legendary Wrecking Crew, an L.A. session band who worked with Brian Wilson, Phil Spector, and Simon & Garfunkel to drop just a few high profile names.

My father married a pure Cherokee
My mother’s people were ashamed of me
The indians said I was white by law
The White Man always called me “Indian Squaw”

[Chorus:]
Half-breed, that’s all I ever heard
Half-breed, how I learned to hate the word
Half-breed, she’s no good they warned
Both sides were against me since the day I was born

“MEDLEY OF HALF BREED, GYPSIES TRAMPS & THIEVES, and DARK LADY”
