EMINEM: Marshall Mathers 2 Review

the-marshall-mathers-lp-2-eminemGuaranteed one of the hottest CD’s for the holiday season is Eminem’s follow-up to his Marshall Mathers album. The original was released in 2000 and has been widely considered one of the greatest rap albums of all-time.  When you name your new CD, the sequel, you’ve got a lot of hype to live up to:  How does the new CD compare?

Producers: Dr Dre (2000) has been replaced by the legendary Def Jam master, Rick Rubin as the co-Executive Producers with Eminem. The lead single, Berzerk, conjures images of the Beastie Boys, Kangol caps, and a prominent Billy Squier “The Stroke” sample.

Theme: Both CD’s share many autobiographical references, but in 2013 Eminem is a little more remorseful and forgiving. “Headlights” is a straight-up apology to his mom, Debbie Mathers. “So Much Better” is written about his relationship with his ex-wife and mother to his kids, Kim.

Guest Stars: In 2000, Dido joined Marshall on “Stan”, Snoop, Dre, and D12 joined on the tracks, “Bitch Please 2” and “Amityville”. This time, Marshall went much more commercial adding Skylar Grey, Kendrick Lamar, and Nate Ruess of fun. Hoping to recapture the magic of their #1 smash, Love The Way You Lie, Eminem teams up again with Rihanna on the guaranteed hit, “The Monster”.

Surprises: Eminem digs deep into his musical archives with samples from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s. One of the CD’s best tracks, “So Far”, adds a country flavored twist to the Slim Shady theme and samples Joe Walsh’s 1978 hit, Life’s Been Good. Best track on the CD, “Rhyme or Reason”, samples The Zombies’ 1968 hit, “The Time Of The Season”.

Singles: Berzerk and Rap God have already landed on the charts.  If there was ever a doubt if Eminem still has his rap battle skills, the lightning quick “Rap God” should fortify his legacy.  “Survival” has been featured on the Call Of Duty commercials and “Monster” (with Rihanna) currently puts four singles on the most recent Billboard charts. Look for the Kendrick Lamar duet, “Lovegame” to be the next CD single.
