The Mayan Calendar ends today. Doomsday followers once again proclaim “today’s the day that the world comes to an end.” Facebook sites are popping up with survival tips and warnings. The Bible says, “no one knows the day or the hour of the end”, yet rumors are running rampant and apocalypse causes are being speculated by “believers”. NASA shows nothing alarming in the skies about December 21, 2012, it’s a typical first day of the winter solstice. So what’s the real story behind the Mayans? Let’s get a first hand opinion.
Even the 2012 Mayans (yes, there are still Mayans in Mexico) don’t believe the world is coming to an end. A CNN interview with a Mayan town representative said “Lots of people say it’s the end of the world, but we don’t believe that, “It’s an era. We are lucky to see how it ends,” said wood carver Santos Esteban in Yaxuna, a sleepy village of fewer than 700 Mayans, located in a territory that once belonged to the ancient kingdom founded around 2000 B.C. For a fun read, check out a CNN list of common 2012 doomsday predictions and he were debunked: http://globalpublicsquare.blogs.cnn.com/2012/12/19/debunking-doomsday-6-rumors-dispelled/
By the way, December 21, 2012 has already happened for half of the world and they’re still standing on 12/22/12 on their calendar. So let’s all relax and enjoy another Friday! Here’s some End Of The World party favorites (and no, I didn’t include the obvious REM song!)
