“LOSE CONTROL” MISSY ELLIOT with CIARA Nicki Minaj has been all over hit singles, mixtapes, and will even be a judge on the upcoming season of American Idol. But her success was built upon the female rap foundation set by artists like Salt N Pepa, Yo-Yo, and MC Lyte in the 80’s and a whole slew of rappers since then including Missy Elliot. Who can forget Missy’s beats, rhymes, and those incredible groundbreaking Hype Williams produced videos with the outrageous special effects? Here’s her chart topping #1 R&B club anthem with Ciara:
“LIGHTERS UP” LIL KIM The Queen of Rap, Lil Kim has been leading the game for the past two decades. From her early records on Bad Boy, collaborations with Mobb Deep and Biggy, gave her legitimacy. Then pop hits like “Lady Marmalade” and “Can’t Hold Me Down” with Christina Aguilera added some mainstream success. Recently, Kim released Black Friday, an EP targeting Nicki Minaj’s attacks against her.
“SMILE FOR ME” AMIL It’s a shame that someone as talented as Amil never achieved the huge success she deserved. Amil was Jay-Z’s protege and featured on songs like “Can I Get A ….”, “Jigga What, Jigga Who”, and “Do It Again”. On each song, her featured rap holds their own against Jay-Z and is a musical highlight. She released one big CD, “All Money Is Legal” but saw her career stall after her debut. Here’s one of my favorite hidden treasures, an intense street jam recalling Amil’s tragic childhood.
“SATISFACTION” EVE Eve Jeffers has been a triple threat the past 15 years. From her introduction as the First Lady of the Ruff Ryders, hip hop jams like “Who’s That Girl”, #1 duets with Gwen Stefani and Alicia Keys, Eve’s credentials as one of the leading female rappers of all-time is established. She’s become a very successful clothing designer with her Fetish label in addition to starring in movies and TV programs like XXX with Vin Diesel and both Barbershop movies.
