G-FUNK LOVE SONGS: Tupac with Keyshia Cole and Rappin 4 Tay

keyshia tupacAt first glance, you’ve got 2Pac on the remix track and the ghetto-styled titled spelling of “Playa Cardz” in the song’s title, so you’re obviously expecting a hardcore gangsta track. But you’ve actually got a beautiful love song from Keyshia’s third CD, A Different Me, in 2008. The posthumous addition of Tupac to the remix adds a great dimension hearing both the male and female side to the conversation. Rumor has it that Tupac’s verses were recorded two days before his fatal shooting in Las Vegas. The song hit the Top 10 on the R&B charts and a second version without the rap was included on Keyshia’s CD.

I'll_be_AroundThe Philadelphia Spinners epitomize that smooth, soulful, rhythm and blues sound of the early 1970’s.   Their feel-good lyrics on their #1 smash, “I’ll Be Around” is the perfect vehicle for sampling and a modern day reinterpretation.   San Fransisco rapper, Rappin 4 Tay, first broke into the spotlight as a guest star on Too Short’s CD, Life Is Too Short.    After a year in prison, Rappin 4 Tay took a shot at his solo career.   The hardcore album mixed gritty street stories with a heavy influence of G-Funk beats.  The lead single, “Playaz Club” was the biggest hit and an gentleman’s club anthem, but the highlight was “I’ll Be Around”.   The clean, inspirational hip hop lyrics plus the inclusion of The Spinners on the track resonated with radio and hit the U.S. Top 40 in 1994.
