The Game Drops Tributes To Prince and MJ

Michael Jackson Better On The Other SideWho would have guessed that the king of rap tribute songs would be The Game? Within hours of Michael Jackson’s death in 2009 and Prince’s death in April this year, The Game recorded tribute songs to each of the music icons. After Michael’s death on June 29th, 2009, The Game corralled an all-star crew to join him on the tribute song “Better On The Other Side.” Boyz II Men, Chris Brown, Usher, Diddy, Polow da Don, DJ Khalil, and Mario Winans came together with an emotional music video that even filmed some of Michael Jackson’s mourners. It wasn’t released as a single or for promotional gain, it was a sincere tribute to a legend who influenced all of these music superstars. Remember when Usher and Chris Brown were both being called “the next Michael Jackson”? The Game credits Michael with ending his beef with 50 Cent.  Best line of the song, “This the type of song that makes the angels cry/ Look up in the sky and I wonder why/ Why you had to go, go/ I know it’s better on the other side.”

“REST IN PURPLE” The Game Featuring Lorine Chia

The Game Better In PurpleWhen Prince passed away in April, networks like CNN and MSNBC ran tributes all day to the Minneapolis music genius. The Game grew up watching Purple Rain and named him a huge inspiration to his life and career. He lived out a dream when he met Prince in 2006. “I was a fan then and I’m a fan now!” Hearing the news report of Prince’s tragic mysterious death, The Game immediately went into the studio and recorded his tribute to the Purple One. Unlike Michael’s song, The Game actually sampled the artist’s music incorporating “When Doves Cry” to the backing track. Singer Lorine Chia sang the hook but the shining moment were these slick bars by The Game, “When God take a star, he make a star, yeah go on, dream today. In the red Corvette gettin’ cream with the top down. Diamonds and pearls all around your neck and that rain purple when it drop down. Yeah darling Nikki, I think its our time,I wanna be your lover, then we gon’ party like it’s 1999.”
