GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN: Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right

Bob_Dylan__Don__t_Think_TwiceMike’s Daily Jukebox in 2013 has been running a semi-weekly feature showcasing some of the most well-written songs of all-time.   This could be a weekly Bob Dylan feature as Mr Zimmerman’s creative mind and unique slant on life has generated some of the most covered and respected songs in the rock and roll era.  One such classic is “Don’t Think Twice” from 1962’s Freewheelin’ Dylan album.    The lyrics speak of regret, bitterness, yet wanting to move on.   It’s as if the singer wants so badly to convince himself everything will work out, the power of positive attitude to get on with his life.

Folk singers, Peter Paul and Mary, had the biggest commercial success with the song but it’s been covered by over 100 artists.    Some of the most curious versions are a recent version by Ke$ha, Waylon Jennings, punk rocker Mike Ness, and an explosive rendition by Eric Clapton at the Bob Dylan 30th Anniversary concert.  Susan Tedeschi’s version pumps some soul and a unique twist hearing a female singer tackle the Dylan classic.

Well, it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
If you don’t know by now
An’ it ain’t no use to sit and wonder why, babe
It’ll never do, somehow
When your rooster crows at the break of dawn
Look out your window and I’m travelin’ on
You’re the reason I’ll be gone
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

And it ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
The light I never knowed
An’ it ain’t no use in turnin’ on your light, babe
I’m on the dark side of the road
But I wish there was somethin’ you would do or say
To try and make me change my mind and stay
We never did too much talkin’ anyway
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

So it ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
Like you never done before
And it ain’t no use in callin’ out my name, gal
I can’t hear you anymore
I’m a-thinkin’ and a-wonderin’, walkin’ down the road,
I once loved a woman, a child I’m told
I give her my heart but she wanted my soul
But don’t think twice, it’s all right

So long, honey, babe
Where I’m bound, I can’t tell
Goodbye’s too good a word, babe
So I’ll just say fare thee well
I ain’t sayin’ you treated me unkind
You coulda done better but I don’t mind
You just kinda wasted my precious time
But don’t think twice, it’s all right
