GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN: Rooster

Alice+In+Chains+-+RoosterLayne Staley and Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains have written some of the most beautifully haunting tragic rock songs of all-time. Their epic, Rooster, was so intense that Jerry Cantrell was crying during the MTV Unplugged performance of the song. What makes the lyrics so incredible are the multiple personal interpretations of the words. The addiction issues that haunted Layne and the overdose death of their friend, Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone, always makes you think the lyrics somehow reference the pain of their loss and despair.

alice_in_chainsBut most Alice In Chains fans recognize that Jerry Cantrell’s dad served in Vietnam as a machine gunner in the War. His dad’s nickname, Rooster. The literal translation paints a stark depiction of the mosquito-ridden foreign soil where soldiers kept photographs of their loved ones tucked under their shirt and next to their heart. As their “eyes burn with stinging sweat”, these brave soldiers fight until their dying breath, holding out hope – “ain’t found a way to kill me yet”.

Ain’t found a way to kill me yet
Eyes burn with stinging sweat
Seems every path leads me to nowhere
Wife and kids household pet
Army green was no safe bet
The bullets scream to me from somewhere

Here they come to snuff the rooster, aww yeah, hey yeah
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain’t gonna die
No, no, no, ya know he ain’t gonna die (x2)

Walkin’ tall machine gun man
They spit on me in my home land
Gloria sent me pictures of my boy
Got my pills ‘gainst mosquito death
My Buddy’s breathin’ his dyin’ breath
Oh god please won’t you help me make it through

Here they come to snuff the rooster, aww yeah
Yeah here come the rooster, yeah
You know he ain’t gonna die
No, no, no ya know he ain’t gonna die
