GREATEST SONGS EVER WRITTEN: Roy Orbison, The Killers

“CRYING”    ROY ORBISON

hiding-out-4It’s not the number of descriptive words in the song lyrics but the powerful emotions conjured up by a succinct, instantly recognizable situation.  In “Crying”, Roy describes that moment after a breakup when you think you’ve moved on with your life.  Then in a split second, you see your ex and those old feelings seep back into your head.  The version of the song with Canadian songstress, K.D. Lang, packs the biggest emotional punch as she trades verses with Roy.

I was all right for a while, I could smile for a while
But I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight
As you stopped to say “Hello”
Aw you wished me well, you couldn’t tell

That I’d been crying over you, crying over you
Then you said “so long”. left me standing all alone
Alone and crying, crying, crying crying
It’s hard to understand but the touch of your hand
Can start me crying

I thought that I was over you but it’s true, so true
I love you even more than I did before but darling what can I do
For you don’t love me and I’ll always be

Crying over you, crying over you
Yes, now you’re gone and from this moment on
I’ll be crying, crying, crying, crying

 “READ MY MIND”    THE KILLERS

killers read my mindBruce Springsteen’s signature song, “Born To Run” is the ultimate desperate appeal to escape the small town life and take a chance on the open road.   Brandon Flowers and The Killers thirty years later wink at Springsteen’s classic and put a modern touch on a classic theme.   This time the guy is ready to go, he’s singing of the open road and the Promised Land.  Yet, his girlfriend isn’t so sure of their relationship and his wild plans.

On the corner of main street
Just tryin’ to keep it in line
You say you wanna move on, and
You say I’m falling behind

Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

I never really gave up on
Breakin’ out of this two-star town
I got the green light
I got a little fight
I’m gonna turn this thing around

Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

The good old days, the honest man
The restless heart, the Promised Land
A subtle kiss that no one sees
A broken wrist and a big trapeze

Oh well, I don’t mind, you don’t mind
Cause I don’t shine if you don’t shine
Before you go, can you read my mind?

It’s funny how you just break down
Waiting on some sign
I pull up to the front of your driveway
With magic soaking my spine

Can you read my mind?
Can you read my mind?

The teenage queen, the loaded gun
The drop dead dream, the Chosen One
A southern drawl, the world unseen
A city wall and a trampoline

Oh well, I don’t mind, you don’t mind
‘Cause I don’t shine if you don’t shine
Before you jump
Tell me what you find
When you read my mind

Slipping in my faith until I fall
He never returned that call
Woman, open the door, don’t let it sting
I wanna breathe that fire again

She said, I don’t mind, you don’t mind
Cause I don’t shine if you don’t shine
Put your back on me
Put your back on me
Put your back on me

The stars are blazing like rebel diamonds cut out of the sun

When you read my mind
