Happy Birthday Barrie!: A Dedication Day To My Girlfriend

Happy Birthday Barrie!  Today is dedicated to a very special woman who means the world to me.  Hope everyone else enjoys a few of her favorite songs.   Barrie had the once in a lifetime opportunity to work closely with Ozzy and Sharon for a period of time.  She told me that this was one of her all-time favorite songs.  You can see why with the blast of positive energy, Sabbath’s metal sound led by a young, vibrant Ozzy Osbourne. It was the last single that Ozzy recorded with the band before his epic solo career. Patience, the will to never give up, and tenacity are the theme of this hard rock classic and those same three traits could be used to describe Barrie’s personality and spirit.

This commercial makes me laugh and totally reminds me of Barrie.   First, the music is one of her favorite “guilty pleasure 70’s silly pop songs”.  Plus I can imagine one day getting a phone call that her car is stuck in a ditch because she swerved to avoid a squirrel.

“EVER THE SAME”   (Unplugged Version)     ROB THOMAS

Another music artist Barrie worked closely with during her days with Sony Records was  Rob Thomas.  On this acoustic version, Rob sings one of the most beautiful love songs he’s ever recorded.  Rob’s lyrics are poignant, simple, yet say so much. The unplugged version was originally used for a Hurricane Katrina benefit show.  I can totally relate to these words as they remind me of many of the things Barrie’s said to me:

You may need me there To carry all your weight
But you’re no burden I assure
You tide me over With a warmth I’ll not forget
But I can only give you love
Fall on me
Tell me everything you want me to be
Forever with you
Forever in me
Ever the same

With the plethora of TV singing competitions nowadays, it’s hard to stand out.   “The Voice”, “X-Factor”, “American Idol”, …..they all run together in your mind.  An artist to keep an eye on is The Voice’s Melanie Martinez.   This is Barrie’s favorite song at the moment for Melanie’s unique style and haunting voice.  In fact, each cover song by Melanie shows she’s definitely a “musical artist” who makes it personal by pouring out her emotion into the performance. My favorite words of the song remind me of the power and influence that two people can have on each other lives:

You show the lights that stop me, turn to stone
You shine it when I’m alone
And so I tell myself that I’ll be strong
And dreaming when they’re gone
