First time you listen to Harry Styles’ first solo single, “Sign Of The Times”, you might be caught off-guard by the high voice and maudlin melody. But the more you listen, the deeper the song digs into your soul. The “One Direction guy we always knew would go solo one day” debuted his new song this week and broke the internet with a viral hit that only amplified anticipation for his full album on the way. It only took 20 minutes to reach #1 on iTunes. The previous record was held by Adele’s “Hello” which took 50 minutes to reach that feat. It’s already the #1 song in 90 countries! Look for those numbers to grow even higher after Harry Styles’ upcoming appearance on Saturday Night Live this week with host, Jimmy Fallon.
“SIGN OF THE TIMES”
Billboard Magazine described “Sign Of The Times” as a fifty year history lesson on British Pop music and they nailed the description. Slices of David Bowie, George Michael, Queen, Oasis, and even The Beatles can be discerned at various moments in the six minute epic song. Lyrics like “Just stop your crying, It will be alright. They told me that the end is near. We gotta get away from here”, sound like a message to his huge fanbase, AKA The Directioners. Harry Styles becomes the fourth band member to release a major solo hit song. Zayn Malik and Niall Horan are both in the Top 40 with their hits “I Don’t Want To Live Forever” (with Taylor Swift) and “This Town” and Louis Tomlinson scored a dance hit (“Just Hold On”) with DJ Steve Aoki.
