For eight seasons it was Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, and Paula Abdul. Do you remember the cavalcade of American Idol judges since then? Remember Kara DioGuardi or Ellen Degeneres on the panel? After Simon left for the X Factor, superstar acts were added to regain some celebrity clout. Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj, and Keith Urban did their best to bring back the American Idol spark. Who’ll be hosting this upcoming season? FOX confirmed that Keith Urban is still there, Jennifer Lopez is coming back after a two year hiatus, but the big surprise, Harry Connick Jr. makes his debut this season.
Harry Connick Jr. has been on the show as a musical guest star and even served as a mentor in 2012. What does Harry bring to the table? He’s sold 25 million albums and has more #1 selling jazz albums than anyone in U.S. jazz chart history. Harry’s got two Emmy Awards (Will & Grace) and a string of high profile movie appearances. His experience on American Idol gave evidence that Harry will offer honest, helpful critiques without attacking the contestants. Idol fans gave him great feedback and persuaded Fox to go with a full panel of musical talent. This will be the first season there are no industry voices judging. Perhaps it’s an attempt to reboot the franchise and copy the success of NBC’s The Voice?
