“WHEN I THINK OF YOU” JOURNEY
When you think of power ballads, Steve Perry and Journey dominated the early 80’s. Imagine the number of proms that used Faithfully, Open Arms, Lights, and Who’s Crying Now as their theme songs. But after their heyday, the group attempted a comeback in 1996 with their Trial By Fire CD. When You Loved A Woman was the lead single and went to #1 but another great album track, When I Think Of You, was pure Journey magic. It turned out to be Steve Perry’s last appearance on a Journey CD as he left the band after the recording session opting not to tour in support of the album. Regardless, the song is one of those cheesy, romantic ballads that stand with their finest work.
“HEAVEN IN YOUR EYES” LOVERBOY
It’s hard to call a song underrated when it rose to #12 on the Billboard charts but Loverboy’s power ballad addition to the Top Gun soundtrack is often overlooked in the Canadian band’s legacy. In addition, when you think of the music of the movie, you remember Tom Cruise serenading Kelly McGinnis to You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling. Berlin’s Take My Breath Away and two Kenny Loggins’ pop hits (Danger Zone and Playing With The Boys) pushed the soundtrack to #1. But Mike Reno’s vocals perfectly captured the movie’s romantic tone with a beautiful power ballad, Heaven In Your Eyes. Fun Fact: REO Speedwagon and Toto were both originally pegged as the artists to sing Danger Zone.
