Justin Timberlake Pays Tribute To Donny Hathaway

If you’re making a Top 10 Soulful Voices of All-Time list, you’re be hard pressed to exclude Donny Hathaway. His career was cut short and Donny Hathaway passed away at the age of 33 reportedly from suicide after battling paranoid schizophrenia for years. But in his brief discography, you’ve got some legendary soulful classics. “A Song For You”, “The Closer I Get To You” with Roberta Flack,”I Love You More Than You’ll Ever Know”, “Someday We’ll All Be Free”, and “Where Is The Love” are a master class in emotive rhythm and blues vocals.

Add Justin Timberlake to the fan club of Donny Hathaway. He along with Amy Winehouse have each described Donny as “the best singer of all-time”. On his landmark CD, “Future Sex/Love Sounds”, Justin paid tribute to Donny with a soft and tender soulful ballad called “(Another Song) All Over Again”. The stark and simple tune features Justin accompanied by a piano. His falsetto at the 4:10 moment in the song could be Justin’s greatest vocal moment in his storied career. “All Over Again” stands out in comparison to the pop/R&B style of the album.

This October, Justin was celebrating his 5th anniversary to his beautiful actress wife, Jessica Biel. To commemorate the romantic moment, Justin recorded a special late night studio version of Hathaway’s monster hit, “A Song For You”. The song has been a longtime favorite of the couple and was their “First dance song” at their wedding in 2012. Although others including Whitney Houston, Ray Charles, and Willie Nelson have tackled “A Song For You”, Donny’s version is often considered the ultimate take on the Leon Russell classic.
