Let’s Play Two – Pearl Jam & Chicago Cubs Documentary

Watch a Los Angeles Lakers or New York Knicks NBA basketball game and they’ll scan the crowd for celebrities sitting courtside. You’ll likely see Jack Nicholson, Jerry Seinfeld, David Beckham, Justin Bieber, or Spike Lee as just a handful of the stars linked to their favorite team. But when it comes to the Chicago Cubs, the first two celebrities to come to mind are comedian Bill Murray and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam. The Cubs had an 108 year drought between World Series wins which came to a miraculous end in 2016 with a dramatic victory over the Cleveland Indians. The entire season played out like a scripted Hollywood movie that was so preposterous that most studio execs would have scrapped the film idea. But the Cubs refused to quit and documentary film makers captured the entire wild season from start to finish in the Ernie Banks inspired title, “Let’s Play Two”. Director Danny Clinch didn’t know how the season would end and how historic it turned out to be but we’re lucky enough to witness it all again in the documentary.

“Let’s Play Two” parallels the Cubs rise to champions with Eddie Vedder’s lifelong love affair with the baseball team. Before he moved out to Seattle to become a rock star, he was a Midwest guy from Evanston, Illinois who loved the lovable loser Cubs. Much of the documentary captures a special 2 night Pearl Jam concert at Wrigley Field that matches the epic hysteria surrounding the Cubs run to the playoffs. Clinch said, “I have learned to welcome the unexpected and it always pays off if you’re ready for it.” Initially “Let’s Play Two” premiered as a special one night only theatrical event but now it’s available on DVD and an accompanying soundtrack is available for purchase. One highlight of the CD is “All The Way”, a 2007 Pearl Jam special release single dedicated to the Chicago Cubs.
