Looking Back: MC Rob Base and DJ EZ-Rock

robbaseanddjezrockIn Clearwater, Florida this week, at the local Philadephia Phillies minor league stadium, live performances by hip hop pioneers, Tone Loc (Wild Thing) and MC Rob Base follow one of the games.    Rob along with his DJ, EZ-Rock, went to the top of the charts in 1986 with their club smash, “It Takes Two”.  The song heavily sampled a James Brown track called “Think (About It)” and who can forget that legendary intro, “Right about now you’re about to possessed by the sounds of MC Rob Base and DJ EZ-Rock, HIT IT!!”    The song is #37 on VH-1’s greatest rap songs of all time.

Rob+Base+They were no one hit wonder as their follow-up, “Joy And Pain” become another vital old school rap anthem of the mid-80’s.  Once again, they drop their names in the song plus a heavy sample of a Frankie Beverly and Maze track influenced the follow-up.  Unfortunately, they were never able to keep up the initial impact of their two massive hits.    Rob now runs a production company, Funky Base Inc., and is producing new acts including a project with his kids!   He’s been married for 19 years and still maintains a heavy tour schedule bringing back their classics.
