Mariah began her career as a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr, best known for “I Still Believe”. Brenda gave Sony President, Tommy Mottola, a copy of Mariah’s demo and we all know what happened next. Life is funny though, as Mariah’s career skyrocketed, Brenda’s crashed. Then in 1998, Mariah released her version of Brenda’s definitive hit and reintroduced the world to Brenda K. Starr
“MOURN YOU TILL I JOIN YOU” NAUGHTY BY NATURE
Treach from Naughty By Nature was a close friend of Tupac Shakur. “Mourn You Till I Join You” stands as one of the greatest tributes of 2Pac. The lyrics chronicles the laughs they shared, the trouble they got into, and you can feel Treach’s love and pain for a lost friend. The song doesn’t hold back any punches and this only adds to the realistic tribute.
“AS WE LAY” SHIRLEY MURDOCK
Many of the greatest R&B singers learned their chops singing gospel in church. Shirley Murdock has a voice that makes you stop and listen. She was first heard on Zapp’s Computer Love but this was her defining musical moment. “As We Lay” went to #5 on the R&B charts. Vocally, it’s one of the greatest songs of the 80’s. Kelly Price covered this song but Shirley’s version is the best.
