When A Microsoft Commercial Becomes A Hit Song

Before Microsoft used Alex Clare’s song for their Internet Explorer 9 commercial, he had probably been most famous for dating Amy Winehouse, just prior to her death.  But the English singer who’s voice sounds like a great karaoke version of Adam Levine scored an international smash hit in 2011 with “Too Close”.  Besides the Microsoft commercial edit, Alex Clare shot two other music videos for the song.  It was  nominated for song of the year at the Brit Awards, and who can forget that dysfunctional chorus, “I’m feeling just too close to love you, so I’ll be on my way”.

“MAD WORLD”   Gary Jules

The Tears For Fears song has been covered over the years by a number of artists including Adam Lambert on American Idol and Halsey in a Taco Bell commercial (why won’t she release a full version?).   But the definitive cover was Gary Jules’ haunting version that became the theme song for Microsoft’s promo for the Gears Of War video game sold exclusively on their XBOX 360 system in 2006.   It later became an entry in the Guinness Book Of World Records as the first song to top the charts after being used to promote a video game.

“PERDONAME”    – Deorro Ft. Adrian Delgado and DyCy

Even Latin America jumped on the Microsoft wave with this club banger that was featured in their ad for their smart phone, Lumia 535.   Like a lot of songs used in commercials, new viewers have no clue who’s singing the song or where to find it.   “Perdoname” became an worldwide smash after the commercial premiered.
