#10 “SCARED TO BE LONELY” Dua Lipa with Martin Garrix Dua Lipa could have easily made this countdown with her songs “New Rules” and “IDGAF” but there was something special when she collaborated with DJ Martin Garrix. The acoustic version of the song really brought home the personal lyrics.
#9 “THIS IS WHY WE RIDE” Body Count Ice-T made a triumphant return in 2017 with his hardcore punk band. One of the most dynamic in-your-face anthems of the year, the album’s title track reminded us that inner city violence is still an issue in America.
#8 “SERMON” James Arthur Huge apology to James Arthur but I should have put “Say You Won’t Go” in the Top 5 last year! We’re fixing that this year with the emotional Hip Hop anthem, “Sermon” from his Back From The Edge LP, a nominee for Best Album of 2017. The addition of rapper, Shotty Horroh adds a gritty touch to a fabulous single.
#7 “SOMETHING JUST LIKE THIS” The Chainsmokers with Coldplay A super hero analogy to open the song sounds like a played-out theme but this EDM jam is one of the most inspirational songs of the year. The addition of Chris Martin’s voice on the record adds instant credibility to The Chainsmokers. The song was performed at Ariana Grande’s Manchester One Love Concert.
#6 “DO RE MI” Blackbear with Gucci Mane If you’ve ever been treated bad by someone you gave your heart to than this is the song for you. Performed by a rapper from Palm Coast, Florida, the explicit lyrics are enhanced by a sick beat that digs deep into your psyche.
#5 “LIABILITY” Lorde The best album of 2017 was Lorde’s “Melodrama”. A top to bottom CD that exposed Lorde’s whole personality. The tender piano ballad, “Liability”, will rip your heart out, show it to you, then stomp on it in front in you.
#4 (TIE) “HURRICANE” Luke Combs and “ASK ME HOW I KNOW” Garth Brooks The #1 country song for 2017 is a tie! If Garth Brooks was willing to make YouTube videos, this one probably would have went to the Hall of Famer. But newcomer Luke Combs was a Southern Rock force that will be only making bigger waves in the coming years.
#3 “HUMAN” Rag N Bone Man This year’s Adele, Rag N Bone Man, is likely to become the next Hollywood sex symbol but his powerful voice is mesmerizing. You know you got chills the first time you heard his lead single, “Human”, a masterpiece of modern pop music.
#2 “PERFECT” Ed Sheeran The countdown feels empty with only one song by Ed Sheeran on it. “Galway Girl”, “Dive”, “How Would You Feel”, and even “River” a new track with Eminem could have made the list. “Perfect” had two unbelievable remakes with Beyonce and Andres Bocelli that turned this into a trilogy of romantic classics.
#1 “ALONE” I PREVAIL I’m not alone in putting this one at #1 for 2017. The readers of Loudwire also voted this the top rock track for 2017. Remember when MTV was playing those killer power ballads by the Hair Bands in the 80s, I Prevail gave us a glimpse of that with their incredible track from their “Lifelines” CD.
