Watching Palladia on cable, Mr Blue Sky: The Story of Jeff Lynne, came on. At first glance you remember Jeff was the leader of E.L.O. and a member of the Traveling Wilburys, but the fascinating film dug deep and revealed the GENIUS of Jeff Lynne. One of the best music documentaries I’ve seen this year! Jeff’s humble, shy, and modest attitude can’t hide that his talent, drive, and creativity earns his spot in Rock N Roll royalty. His meticulous skills, studio mastery, and melodic songwriting skills are legendary.
He grew up a fan of Del Shannon, The Beatles, and Roy Orbison. He ended producing albums for Del, Tom Petty (Full Moon Fever) and of course, he was a member of the Wilburys with Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and George Harrison. But even more impressive was when the Beatles recorded “Free As A Bird” for their Anthology project, Jeff Lynne was asked to produce the single. Imagine what a thrill to live out your rock and roll dreams with your heroes.
The music of the Electric Light Orchestra had that incredible duality of sounding retro, Beatlesque, honoring old school rock ‘n roll, yet at the same was innovative in their use of orchestral multi-layering, synthesizers, and unique studio tricks. When you analyze the lyrics of “Can’t Get It Out Of My Mind”, “Telephone Line”, and “Mr Blue Sky”, you have a trio of timeless love song ballads with a simple message yet a marvelous masterpiece in simplicity.
