“ALWAYS ALRIGHT” THE ALABAMA SHAKES from Silver Linings Playbook
For the past year I’ve been touting the classic rock throwback band, The Alabama Shakes. Brittany Howard conjures up the spirit of Janis Joplin and Aretha Franklin in every performance. Their band performed “Hold On” and this song on Saturday Night Live last weekend. Today, the song was neglected for nomination by the Oscars but it’s a vital track on the soundtrack to Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper’s Best Picture Nominee: Silver Linings Playbook. The film was brilliant, Jennifer deserves her nomination, and the Alabama Shakes not only deserved Best New Artist at the Grammys, they should be winning an Oscar tonight. Of course, Adele will win, but sometimes you’ve got to root for the underdog.
“EVERYBODY NEEDS A FRIEND” NORAH JONES from Ted
The Oscar nominated song penned by Oscar host, Seth MacFarlane, is classic Disney pop magic. A feel good piano ditty about best friends which is perfect for an animated kids story. Only this time, the song was featured on the soundtrack to Ted. The movie is hysterical, raunchy, over-the-top, and very adult themed despite having one of the co-stars being a teddy bear. Funny, I would have thought the Thunder Buddies song from the film was much more memorable.
Here are the other Best Song Nominees
“PI’S LULLABY” from Life Of Pi
“SKYFALL” ADELE from Skyfall
“SUDDENLY” from LES MISERABLES
“BEFORE MY TIME” from CHASING ICE
Yes, it’s Scarlett Johansson on vocals.
