Since the mid 90’s, the musical force of Timothy Zachery Mosley can’t be understated. Wait, you don’t know Timothy? We all know him as Timbaland, a master producer, songwriter, and even a prominent recording artist himself. This year alone, he’s worked on Beyonce’s new CD, produced a new Michael Jackson track and Justin Timberlake’s 20/20 CD, working with Missy Elliott on a comeback album, and even collaborating with Cher on new material. Close to one hundred Top 40 hits have been recorded, written, or produced by Timbaland. Where did it all start? Who were the first two artists to take a risk and go with an unknown up and coming producer?
In 1996, Ginuwine released his debut CD, “Ginuwine……The Bachelor”. Looking for the hottest beats, Ginuwine’s label chose Timbaland to produce their lead single. Mixing a traditional hip hop start and stop beat into a smooth R&B record injected new energy into the musical genre. Add in those sexy lyrics, “If you’re horny, let’s do it / Ride it; my pony.” and a little vocoder and you’ve got one of the most seductive hits of the decade. On the remix, Timbaland adds his vocals to the track, a move similar to Puff Daddy’s style at the time. After working with Ginuwine, Timbaland turned his attention to Aaliyah. While working on her 2nd CD, “One In A Million”, her team wanted something fresh and current. Timbaland’s electronic beats and Missy Elliott’s collaboration pushed “If Your Girl Only Knew” to #1 on the R&B Charts. After these back to back huge singles, Timbaland became THE hot producer of his time. If you’re flipping around radio stations, you’re likely to hear Timbaland’s signature sound all over the place.
