Mya Harrison: R&B Superstar to Struggling Independent Artist

Mya 16Sixteen years ago, following the loss of artists like Aaliyah and Left Eye, Beyonce’ with Destiny’s Child, Jennifer Lopez, Brandy, Monica, and a young and sexy rising star named Mya were filling the huge void in female hip hop singers. Mya’s high profile self-titled debut CD featured help from Missy Elliott, Diane Warren, Silkk the Shocker, Babyface, and Sisqo on the lead single “It’s All About Me”. Mya Harrison’s sweet and innocent voice combined with her classy yet sexy image shook up the music world. Collaborations with Ol’ Dirty Bastard (Ghetto Supastar) and Jadakiss/Jay-Z (The Best of Me) opened up Mya to a huge rap audience. Before long, Mya was a fixture on MTV and on top of the R&B charts. Remember “Lady Marmalade”? Christina Aguilera, Lil Kim, P!nk, and Mya took over the Oscars, Grammys, and MTV Awards. She was even acting in movies like Chicago and Shall We Dance? But after four successful CD’s, her meteoric rise took an incredible nose dive and a surprising career decision.

Mya LiberationAfter switching to Universal Motown Records, Mya’s promotion team and poor label management caused her CD, Liberation, to get lost in the shuffle. It was released as a download-only CD in Japan and unavailable in the States. She left Motown and became an independent artist who started working on her label (Private 9). From becoming one of the quickest rising hip hop stars of the early 2000’s, Mya disappeared just as quickly. Since 2008, Mya has been keeping a small presence in Japan with mixtapes and poorly received albums like K.I.S.S. (Keep It Sexy & Simple). Digital singles on iTunes haven’t generated much heat without the help of a major label. Her stint of ABC’s “Dancing With Stars” kept Mya in the eye of the public (she came in 2nd place) but her music and acting career has taken a backseat while she continues as an independent artist.

“LIFE IS TOO SHORT” (From Liberation – Japanese release only)

Mya With LoveIn 2014, Mya celebrated the 16th anniversary of her debut CD with an iTunes EP on Valentine’s Day called “With Love”. A second iTunes EP “Sweet XVI” came out in April. Mya has declared she won’t release a new full studio album until a major label will support it and a “comfortable situation presents itself”. The music industry is a fickle beast ruled by a “what have you done for me lately” mentality. Mya has even resorted to acting in a cheesy low budget SyFy movie “Bermuda Tentacles” with Terminator’s Linda Hamilton this year. Let’s hope Mya makes a triumphant comeback in the upcoming year as she’s working on her upcoming 9th CD without a major label contract.
