One of the classic movies of the 90’s, Swingers, included Vince Vaughn’s breakthrough role as Trent and Jon Favreau’s portrayal of his best friend, Mikey. Not sure what memory stands out most to you? Vince’s line, “You’re So Money”, Favreau’s infamous battle with the answering machine, or Heather Graham’s swing dance with Favreau? The movie ignites a revival of 40’s swing music. Suddenly, weekend swing dance parties were popping up everywhere in the 90’s.
The Neo-swing music genre was coined. Groups with crazy creative names like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Gas House Gorillas, and Royal Crown Revue were capitalizing on the swing phenomena. After leaving the Stray Cats, Brian Setzer got an orchestra together complete with a horn section and toured with a rockabilly/swing hybrid sound. Of course, who can forget Jim Carrey’s unforgettable performance in The Mask, lighting up the screen with a memorable dance with Cameron Diaz. Here’s a look back at the 90’s swing craze!
