95% of the Miami Dolphins is owned by Steven Ross and 4% by the previous owner, Wayne Huizinga. But the other 1% of the NFL franchise ownership is comprised of celebrity investors including Jimmy Buffett, The Estefans, Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Fergie, and tennis’ Venus and Serena Williams. Each celebrity had to be approved by the NFL front office. It is significant that there are no African American or Hispanic primary owners in the league so let’s give the Dolphins credit for recognizing some Miami cultural icons who exemplify the city.
The vibrant diverse Miami community is multi-cultural, energetic, and worldy and these artists represent their city so well. This celebrity ownership is unique in the NFL with Miami. Yet in the NBA, it’s much more common. Jay-Z has part ownership of the Brooklyn Nets as does Nelly (Charlotte Bobcats), Usher (Cleveland Cavaliers), and Will Smith (the Philadelphia 76ers). Here’s a couple Miami Dolphins promos and some Latin rhythm from the most entertaining owners in professional football.
“BOOM BOOM POW – Miami Dolphins Version” FERGIE
“ESTEFAN’S PRESS CONFERENCE”
“VALIA LA PENA (Salsa Version)” MARC ANTHONY
“CUTS BOTH WAYS” GLORIA ESTEFAN
