Oops I Did It Again: Repeated Band Names (Part II)

Yesterday, the top five artists that share the same last name as their first name was the theme of the day. Today, we’re looking at the top five bands that lacked some originality and chose to double up the spelling of their name. You’ll notice that all of these bands have a connection to the 80’s, a curious trend or weird coincidence? Bands like the Goo Goo Dolls and Love Spit Love were questionable choices with the theme so they were excluded: My honorable mention goes to Talk Talk (“It’s My Life”) and The The (late 80’s Alternative Group).

If you put Richard Marx and Toto (the band, not the dog) into a blender, you’d get Mr Mister.   An 80’s pop/rock band that was safe, commercial, and very forgettable despite TWO #1 hits.

I’m ranking Danger Danger a little higher on the list than they deserve for earning extra credit by going above and beyond with the theme.  The 80’s glam metal band with the double name had two big singles with creative names, “Naughty Naughty” and “Bang Bang” – gotta love it!

Karen O., The leader of the alternative band, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, recorded the theme to the U.S. version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.   Working with Trent Reznor, Karen’s vocals added a chilling tone to the soundtrack.   Her band has been consistent for the past decade and their big hit, “Maps” is listed in Rolling Stone’s list of the top 500 songs ever.

None of three guys are named Tony but it had such a nice ring to it, they adopted the name.  Raphael Saadiq and Dwayne Wiggins are brothers from Oakland, CA, and scored a number of R&B hits in the late 80’s/early 90’s.  “Anniversary”, “It Feels Good”, “Whatever You Want”, “Diary” with Alicia Keys, and “It Never Rains In Southern California”.  Raphael has continued making great music since the band’s breakup.

2. THE GO-GO’s

Belinda Carlisle and Jane Wiedlin started making punk records in their garage as teenagers. From those humble days on the IRS record label to becoming the iconic 80’s all-girl rock band. Who knew they’d be the first all-female band to write and perform a #1 album on the Billboard chart.    They’ve been around for 30 years and still sound and look great!

Here’s some music trivia for you:   What band was named after a villian in Jane Fonda’s skin-flick Barbarella?   Yes, Duran Duran, aka, “the prettiest band in rock”.   Despite getting labeled as a band hopping on the new MTV video craze, Duran Duran put out quality albums and no one doubts the talents of lead guitarist, Andy Taylor.  13 albums, over 100 million records sold, they earn the #1 spot of double band names.
