Death Row Records was a mainstay of rap music in the 90s. Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, Suge Knight, Tha Dogg Pound, Nate Dogg, and of course, Tupac Shakur were the superstars of the music label. Even MC Hammer went gangsta for an album and recorded with Death Row Records. But it wasn’t just a guys-only club, Lady of Rage was a prominent artists on the label as well as Michel’le. Her name with the unique apostrophe location might not quickly come to mind at first glance. First if you were fan of early 90s Hip Hop you have to remember the first three songs from Michel’le! R&B Divas: Los Angeles was a reality TV show on TV One that ran for three seasons. IChante Moore, Lil Mo, and Michel’le are the only three singers who’ve been featured on the show each of the seasons. Dawn Robinson (En Vogue), Kelly Price, and Claudette Ortiz (City High) were also prominent members on series.

Remember during the Oscar-snubbed “Straight Outta Compton” when it was revealed that Dr. Dre assaulted his fiance’? Yes, that was Michel’le who bared Dre’s son, Marcel. A few years later, Michel’le married the boss, the infamous Suge Knight. History repeated itself as it was revealed that Suge also beat Michel’le during their time together before they divorced six years into the marriage. They have a daughter named Bailei who turns 16 this year. Their story was captured in a Lifetime film, “Dre, Suge, and Michel’le” released in 2013. Life has been a rollercoaster for the R&B songbird, but her life is on the rebound and she’s been part of the cast of the Broadway musical, Love Jones. It’s an adaptation of the 1999 movie and features Musiq Soulchild, MC Lyte, Dave Hollister, and Chrisette Michelle and Tony Grant in the lead roles.
