Retro Spring Break: KC, Stevie B, Ja Rule with Christina Milian

couple_sunset_beachMarch is here, the weather’s getting warmer and the quest for a coconut brown tan has begun. Thousands of college students will be booking Spring Break trips to exotic locations like Cancun, Panama City, Malibu, and Fort Lauderdale. Let’s take look back at some retro jams that conjure up past Spring Break memories. First, here’s the 80’s King of Miami dance pop, KC, who was given solo credit for this song in 1983. Perhaps losing the moniker of KC and the Sunshine Band gave the song more credibiity during the backlash against disco era?

mike pease martha quinn MTVAs we head into the early 90’s, Latin Freestyle was the trend of the moment. Clubs playing nothing but Hi-NRG dance tracks that combined keyboards, drum machines, but always emphasized upbeat party themes. Stevie B was labeled the “King Of Freestyle” and you can’t think about early 90’s Miami and not include a Stevie B dance track. Today you may catch him at a retro collaboration concert or even headlining a New Years Eve party, but he’s actually maintained a current career in Brazil.

Christina-MilianMurder Inc., the label synonymous with Ja Rule’s dynamic rise in the late 90’s to mid 2000’s, had a magical run as one of the dominant hip hop labels of the time. Ja Rule had a string of collaborations with female R&B acts including Ashanti, Mary J Blige, Jennifer Lopez, and it all began here with young R&B ingenue, Christina Milian. She had a brief pop career and has recently focused on acting and TV hosting, perhaps hoping to become the female Ryan Seacrest? The sand, the bikinis, the waves, and the attitude in this video reminds us summer is almost here!
