Sexy, Slow, Low Down Blues: Gary Moore, Chris Isaak, Joanne Shaw Taylor

“BABY DID A BAD BAD THING”     CHRIS ISAAK
Tom Cruise and wife, Nicole Kidman, starred in Stanley Kubrick’s sexually fired movie, Eyes Wide Shut. The cult classic was driven by erotic images and sexual energy from the exotic musical choices. Chris Isaak contributed “Baby Did A Bad Bad Thing” to the movie soundtrack. The video starred the beautiful model, Laetitia Casta, being secretly watched while she was seductively danced in a hotel room. The uncensored video was too hot for VH1 and was restricted to late night viewing only. I’m shocked ZZ Top didn’t sue Chris for ripping off “La Grange”, but I like the direction he took the song.

“TIME HAS COME”   JOANNE SHAW TAYLOR
“You gave me good times….but I remember the bad times more” – Joanne Shaw Taylor defies the genre. When you picture low down, dirty blues, you likely aren’t picturing a blue eyed, young woman with long blonde hair tearing up a guitar solo as nasty as this song. As the song and video progresses, Joanne is possessed by the spirit of early blues masters like Robert Johnson, Albert King, and Buddy Guy. Check out the facial expressions, the passion in her vocals, and the fire in her fingers during the solo. She’s only 26 from Detroit, Michigan. Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics discovered her. Blues guitarists don’t get a lot of press, but Joanne is definitely a future artist to watch.

“STILL GOT THE BLUES FOR YOU”     GARY MOORE

A year ago in February, Gary Moore, passed away at the age of 58.  Now recognized as one of the greatest electric guitarists of all-time, Gary achieved his major success in Europe.  In fact, if you made an Irish Rock Hall Of Fame, you’d have to include Thin Lizzy, of which Gary (from Northern Ireland) was their lead guitarist for a spell.   After leaving the band, he released a number of highly successful blues albums culminating in his 1990 best seller, “Still Got The Blues For You”.    The slow, sensual solo on the title track is an enticing musical experience.
