Summer 2017 – What’s New In Reggae?

Take one look at the iTunes Reggae Singles chart at any given time and you’ll see not a lot of change.   The current Top 10 singles chart has Shaggy at #1 and #2 with “It Wasn’t Me” and “Angel”, two hits from over a decade ago.   Five tracks from Bob Marley’s Legend CD, UB40’s “Red Red Wine”, and the Jewish reggae artist Matisyahu’s “One Day” from years ago round out of the list.   Nothing current is able to surpass these longtime reggae classics.   But new music is always coming out and if you dig a little deeper on the charts, there are some fresh reggae hits that you need to add to your summer beach playlist.  Here’s three new reggae tracks that you may have missed or slept on:

“NO LIE”    Sean Paul Featuring Dua Lipa

An inclusion on the soundtrack to The Rock’s summer movie, Baywatch, it was actually released in the States in late January but it’s got that perfect summer vibe.   Dua Lipa can literally do no wrong lately and if you haven’t checked out her debut album, it’s one of the best albums of 2017.

“TAKE HER”   Common Kings

“She loves palm trees, take her to the islands”.   A laid-back ode to the beach is such an instant feel-good chill out track.  Common Kings have been around a few years and even opened for artists like Justin Timberlake and Fifth Harmony.

“MEDICATION”   Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley and Stephen Marley

Of course, you can’t make a list of reggae songs and not include royalty.   The only new song on the iTunes Top 10 is a 420 pot anthem by two of Bob Marley’s most prolific sons.   The song appears on Damian’s Stony Hill album which drops on July 21st. The preachy message about the power of ganja is a little much but the single holds up on its own merits especially the chorus featuring Stephen.
