“AMERICAN KIDS” Kenny Chesney
There’s something about summer songs, they get stuck in your head for days with those silly pop melodies. Like the sun itself, they’re comfortable, warm, familiar, and energizing. Kenny Chesney’s latest “American Kids” is a major departure from traditional country music. The quick tempo lyrics remind us of Billy Joel’s tongue-twister “We Didn’t Start The Fire”. He manages to name check Springsteen’s “Born In The USA”, Mellancamp’s “Pink Houses”, and even Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dreamin'” all in the first half of the song! The video is all about freedom, innocence, and fun. A lively crew of young people all crammed into a Partridge Family bus out for a day of adventure. The song’s message was best described by Kenny, “I don’t care who you are or what you do, everybody needs to let their hair down, just forget about expectations and be in the moment,”.
“‘Can I have your daughter for the rest of my life? Say yes, say yes
‘Cause I need to know”. Asking your disapproving potential father-in-law for his daughter’s hand in marriage sets the stage for one of the catchiest summer hits of 2014. Canadian pop reggae-fusion band, Magic!, has exploded onto the charts worldwide, surpassing Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” to become the current #1 song in the country. You’ve got to go back to 2007 and Sean Kingston’s “Beautiful Girls” for the last time a reggae song topped the singles chart. No one is ever going to describe Magic! as just another cookie cutter pop band. They’re Canadian and sing reggae fusion, think The Police back in their Zenyatta Mondatta days. Their lead singer, Nasri, was born in Canada but his background is Palestinian. Watch out for this band, their next single “Don’t Kill The Magic” is taking over the airwaves.
