THE BRIDGE: Billy Joel Spotlight Album
June 20th, 2013
Billy Joel’s tenth album, The Bridge, was not his biggest seller and may not be listed among the Top 5 Billy Joel Albums of All-time. But I’m sure the recording of this album holds a truly special place in his heart. Billy Joel’s love for his musical hero, Ray Charles, is so evident that he named his daughter Alexa Ray in his honor. During the studio sessions for The Bridge, Ray and Billy collaborated on a piano bar classic, Baby Grand, that lives with Piano Man as one of his definitive late night bar anthems.

In addition, another of Billy’s musical idols, Steve Winwood from Blind Faith, Traffic, and The Spencer Davis Group joined Billy Joel for the recording of Getting Closer. One of the biggest pop stars of the moment, Cyndi Lauper, co-wrote and sang backup on Code Of Silence. Add in jazz giants, Michael Becker and Ron Carter on Big Man on Mulberry Street, and you have Billy Joel’s most creative troupe of collaborators on any of his brilliant CD’s. The three singles, This Is The Time, Modern Woman (from the movie soundtrack), and A Matter of Trust, all made a splash on the Top 40 charts. My favorite song was the highly personal ballad, Temptation, which spoke about his relationship with wife, Christie Brinkley. The video for Big Man From Mulberry Street was featured in an episode of Bruce Willis’ Moonlighting!
