In the world of Contemporary Christian Music, TobyMac reuniting with DC Talk is the equivalent of Beyonce’ getting the girls of Destiny’s Child back together. DC Talk was THE consummate act of the genre from the late 80s to the early 2000s. They’ve been described as “the most popular overtly Christian act of all-time”. Then in 2001, one of the trio, TobyMac embarked on a highly successful solo career that’s still going strong today. TobyMac’s music has huge crossover appeal and while still maintaining a stronghold on the CCM music charts, he has broken over into the world of mainstream pop music. Despite going solo a decade and a half ago, TobyMac and DC Talk have reunited a few times for amazing collaborations over the years. In 2002, they teamed up for a 9/11 tribute “Let’s Roll”. In 2004, their version of “Atmosphere (Remix)” didn’t receive the attention it deserved but it’s such a beautiful record. Check out the opening lyrics,
“I know you keep a journal and every page is rippled from the tears that you cry.
Ain’t no meanin’ to your scribble ’cause words can’t describe what you’ve been feelin’ inside.”
“I know you’re all alone in a crowd full of friends
I can see it in your eyes that your fadin’ again
Checking out, moving into your hole
Where the light can’t touch any part of your soul”
“ATMOSPHERE (Remix)” TobyMac Featuring DC Talk
The trio recently got back together for a high energy track called “Love Feels Like” featured on TobyMac’s album “This Is Not A Test”. Even if you’re not a fan of Christian Music, you’ll notice that the 52 year old singer still brings the heat live and compares favorably to today’s reigning pop stars like Justin Timberlake. Here’s the live performance from October’s 2016 Dove Awards.
