Top 12 Songs of 2012: #8 – #5

AlabamaShakes

8. “I AIN’T THE SAME” THE ALABAMA SHAKES

One of the biggest surprises of 2012 was the debut CD by the Alabama Shakes. It almost feels like they warped out of a time machine and came back from 1968. A combination of blues, Stax soul, and Southern rock from a multi-racial band led by Brittany Howard. They’re nominated for Best New Artist at this year’s Grammy Awards.

7. “ERASE MY SCARS” EVANS BLUE

Technically not from 2012 but this was the year the song received the most attention. The song’s lyrics describe an inner struggle with moving on versus frustration. It’s a powerful video dedicated to the nephew of the lead singer who died as a child.

6. “STAY AWHILE” RYAN STARR

Another singer who hasn’t received the critical acclaim and attention deserving of his talents. Ryan Star (once a reality show contestant on a singing show) mesmerizes us here on “Stay Awhile” with a sensual, sexy groove. This is so much positive energy and undeniable feel-good emotion here.

5. “THE TRAVELERS Part 2” STONE SOUR

Corey Taylor’s side project, Stone Sour, released one of the top rock albums of 2012. The House of Gold & Bones was the first episode of a 2 CD series with the follow-up planned for 2013. The latest CD features the slow guitar intro of The Travelers Part 1 but explodes into a rock frenzy for The Travelers Part 2. It recalls the power ballads of Slipknot and Corey’s solo single “Bother”.

  1. This brought back some really nice memories for me. I love all of these bands and the songs are amazing!! If I had to pick my absolute favorite it would have to be Evans Blue “Erase my scars”. That’s one of the coolest bands you have ever introduced me to. Thanks Mike!!! 😀 😀 😀
