My 2012 country music song of the year, Luke Bryan demonstrates that country music can rock and be as sexy as anything else on the pop charts. The seductive come-on lines and the passionate delivery created the perfect summer love song and kickstarted Luke’s career into overdrive.
3. “REVENGE” DANGER MOUSE, SPARKLEHORSE, and THE FLAMING LIPS
Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse? A combination that sounds like a 70’s cartoon duo that battled Bullwinkle. The song received major publicity after an episode of CBS’ Person of Interest. There is a hypnotic, late night perfection to this slow burning, brooding song. The CD includes photographs by David Lynch that only enhance the esoteric atmosphere of the CD.
2. “I LOOK TO YOU” WHITNEY HOUSTON with R. KELLY
2012 was the year we lost the Voice of my generation. In 2009, R. Kelly penned one of his spiritual, inspirational tour-de-force ballads for Whitney. The song became the title track for her last CD and sneaked into the Top 20 but didn’t leave the mark on the public like “I Will Always Love You” or “Greatest Love of All”. At her funeral, R. Kelly sang this song and re-recorded the track as a duet for her posthumous greatest hits CD. It inspires me and is arguably my #1 song for the year.
1. “IT’S TIME” IMAGINE DRAGONS
Some magazines and websites go with trendy bands that no one has ever heard of for their Best Of The Year countdowns. Is it an attempt to look cool? That they know more about music than you do? I’m going with my most played song of the year, over 10 million YouTube hits. The Imagine Dragons had their first Top 10 hit with this song that became part of 2012’s soundtrack, even Darren Criss covered it on Glee. Music has the power to change our emotions, this song always motivated me at the same time it brought a smile to my face with each listen.
