Smooth like butter, Angie Stone’s “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” is one of those laidback R&B slow jams that let you just drift away about five minutes. Sampling Gladys Knight and the Pip’s #1 hit, “Neither One Of Us Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye”, Angie takes on an emotional journey here. If you’ve experienced a painful breakup, you go through a range of emotions: pain, confusion, anger, remorse, but ultimately acceptance. This 90’s Neo-Soul classic sets the scenario: ‘There’s no hiding place when someone has hurt you, It’s written on your face, and it reads “Broken spirit, lost and confused….empty, scared, used and abused, a fool.” But time changes everything and like the changing seasons, a new dawn with golden opportunities awaits you. Angie sings, “My sunshine has come and I’m all cried out. There’s no more rain in this cloud.” Angie released this gem on her debut album, Black Diamond, in 1999.
On Angie Stone’s second album, she scored the biggest hit of her career, “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” Like her first hit, Angie’s producer once again sampled a 70’s classic, “Back Stabbers” by the O’Jays. Like Eddie Levert from the O’Jays, Angie got her start singing in the church. Both songs have such an authentic soulful vibe which emotionally resonate with their fans and will ultimately stand the test of the time. They don’t make ’em like this anymore and that’s a shame!
