WESTCOAST SUMMER JAMS: Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Lil Wayne and The Game, Warren G with Nate Dogg

“DON’T STOP” BONE THUGS-N-HARMONY

westcoastBone Thugs-N-Harmony were signed by Easy E, the leader of N.W.A., back in the early 90’s.   The hits like Tha Crossroads and Thuggish Ruggish Bone pushed the Cleveland band into the forefront of 90’s rap.   New labels, solo careers, inner conflict among the brothers, before long Bone Thugs-N-Harmony lost their popularity.  Then in 2006, the brothers united for Thug Stories and the spark was ignited again.  Don’t Stop has a prominent pop sample and an uplifting message.  This style was even more evident on one of their best CD’s, 2008’s follow-up, Strength & Loyalty.

“MY LIFE” THE GSAME with LIL’ WAYNE
The diss song that created a ton of controversy a few years ago. Eminem’s friend and bandmate, Proof, died tragically and rappers around the world were shook by his passing. In My Life, The Game shared his outrage, check out these original lyrics:

You see them 24’s spinning? I earned ’em
And all the pictures of me and Em, I burned ’em
So there ain’t no proof that I ever walked through 8 Mile
And since there ain’t no Proof, I’ll never walk through 8 Mile

The Game later changed the lyrics and stated he had no beef with Eminem but was depressed over Proof’s death and was sorry for the interpretation that Eminem wasn’t legit. The song has a collage of great samples and Lil Wayne does a great job on the street fable’s hookline.

“NOBODY DOES IT BETTER” WARREN G with NATE DOGG

They can come closer than close, yeah
Original they never will be
We bumpin’ from coast to coast, yeah yeah
We just tryin’ make you see
Nobody does it better

nate dogg warren gThe laidback, feel-good, slow groove vibe on those Warren G and Nate Dogg collaborations were the Westcoast soundtrack music for summer BBQ’s. Nate’s mellow, soulful flow was always instantly recognizable and the perfect partner for Warren. Their music combined jazz, hip hop, soul, yet still authentic rap. Here’s one of those essential additions to your iPod “Summer Jam” playlist.
